FPSC General Recruitment Test: New MCQ Pattern, Syllabus & Free Practice

The new FPSC test pattern

The Federal Public Service Commission replaced traditional written tests with an MCQ-based examination system, effective from 21 September 2025. Here is what candidates need to know:

  • BS-16 and BS-17 posts: a single MCQ paper of 100 marks.
  • BS-18 and above: two separate MCQ papers.
  • Qualifying marks: 40 to 50 percent, depending on the post.
  • Negative marking: 0.25 marks are deducted for every wrong answer.

That last point changes your strategy completely: blind guessing now costs you. Attempt questions you are reasonably confident about, and skip the ones where you genuinely have no idea. Note that this change does not apply to the CSS competitive examination, which keeps its descriptive written format.

What the syllabus covers

For general posts, the test typically includes an English section (vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure) plus a professional or subject section tied to the post. FPSC publishes a dedicated syllabus for each advertisement — always check the syllabus for your specific case number.

How to prepare

  1. Respect the negative marking. Practice deciding which questions to skip — it is a skill.
  2. Build English accuracy. Vocabulary and grammar questions are the most predictable marks in the paper.
  3. Revise current affairs and general knowledge. These sections reward consistent daily reading.
  4. Take timed mock tests. Match the real conditions: 100 questions, strict time limit, no second chances.
