The MPT pattern
Before you can sit the CSS written examination, you must clear the MPT — the MCQ-Based Preliminary Test. It is a screening test only: your MPT score does not count toward your final CSS merit, but without it you cannot proceed.
- 200 multiple-choice questions, 200 marks, 200 minutes
- No negative marking — attempt every question
- Qualifying marks: 33% (66 out of 200)

Subject weightage
- General Science & Ability (arithmetic, algebra, geometry, logical reasoning): 60 marks
- English (vocabulary, grammar, comprehension): 50 marks
- General Knowledge (everyday science, current affairs, Pakistan affairs): 50 marks
- Islamic Studies (or Civics & Ethics for non-Muslims): 20 marks
- Urdu (grammar, translation): 20 marks
English and General Ability together carry 110 of the 200 marks — that is where the test is won.
How to prepare
- Prioritize the heavy sections. Master English grammar and vocabulary plus basic mathematics and reasoning first.
- Attempt everything. With no negative marking, an educated guess is always better than a blank.
- Build speed. One minute per question leaves no room for getting stuck — practice moving on.
- Read current affairs daily. The GK section rewards consistent reading, not last-minute cramming.

Note: the course covers the screening-test subjects. The CSS written examination itself is descriptive (essays and long answers) and needs separate preparation.
