SPSC Written Test 2026: Paper Pattern, Syllabus & Preparation Guide

If you applied for a Sindh government post through the Sindh Public Service Commission, the first thing to get right is deceptively simple: SPSC does not run one single exam. It runs two very different examinations — a one-paper MCQ “pre-interview written test” for general posts, and a three-stage CSS-style Combined Competitive Examination (CCE) for the executive cadre. Prepare for the wrong one and every hour of study is wasted.

The timing makes this urgent: SPSC Advertisement 05/2026 (54 posts across departments) closed on 23 October 2026, so thousands of applicants are now waiting for test schedules — and the CCE-2025 written examination is already underway this month (both confirmed on the official spsc.gov.pk, checked 20 October 2026). This guide maps both tracks: the exact paper pattern, the syllabus, the qualifying marks, and the negative-marking rule that surprises most candidates.

The two SPSC tracks — know which exam you are sitting

  • Track 1 — General recruitment. One MCQ-based pre-interview written test, then an interview. This covers posts like Assistant (BPS-16), lecturers, officers and specialists advertised in the regular consolidated advertisements.
  • Track 2 — CCE (executive cadre). A screening MCQ test, then a descriptive written examination, then a viva voce. This is the provincial civil service track — the Sindh equivalent of the CSS.

Your advertisement tells you which track you are on. Everything below is organised by track.

Track 1: the pre-interview written test (general posts)

This is the exam most SPSC applicants will sit. Its shape, taken from recent papers:

  • 100 multiple-choice questions, 100 marks. Recent Assistant (BPS-16) papers ran 100 questions in 60 minutes; the exact duration varies by post, so plan on roughly a minute per question.
  • Negative marking of -0.5 per wrong answer — printed on the general instructions of the Assistant (BPS-16) papers of 2020 and 2024. That is double the -0.25 used by PPSC and FPSC, and it changes your attempting strategy completely (more below). SPSC prints the rule on the paper itself, so read your own paper’s instructions before question 1 — the printed rule is final.
  • Qualifying marks are set per post. As one recent example, the August 2026 result for the Psychiatrist (BPS-17) post — conducted as a computer-based test — set the qualifying datum at 51.5 out of 100. Do not assume a fixed 40% or 50% for your post; the advertisement or result notice states it.
  • Some posts now run as computer-based tests (CBT), so practise on-screen MCQs too if your call letter says CBT.
  • Syllabus is bachelor’s-degree level. For Assistant-type papers SPSC has announced a split of roughly 40% English and 60% general paper (General Knowledge, Pakistan Affairs, Current Affairs, Everyday Science and Islamiat). Technical and teaching posts weight the paper toward the post’s own subject instead.

Candidates who qualify are called for interview, and the final merit combines written and interview marks.

Track 2: the CCE — screening, descriptive written, viva

The Combined Competitive Examination is a different animal, much closer to the CSS:

  1. Screening test (MCQ). 100 MCQs in 90 minutes, -0.25 per wrong answer, and 50 marks to qualify for the written stage — this is the pattern SPSC officially announced for the CCE-2021 screening. The paper covers English, Current Affairs, Pakistan Affairs, General Ability and Everyday Science. Screening marks qualify you; the real contest is the written stage.
  2. Descriptive written examination. The official CCE-2019 papers published on spsc.gov.pk show the format: English Essay (50 marks), English General with precis, comprehension and idioms (100 marks), and General Knowledge including Everyday Science (150 marks) — alongside Pakistan Studies, Islamiat or Ethics, Sindhi where prescribed, and optional subjects chosen from notified groups. To pass, SPSC requires 33% in each paper and 50% in the aggregate (the Commission’s own stated rule, reported in court coverage in August 2026). No supplementary answer sheets are issued — SPSC said so explicitly for the CCE-2025 session.
  3. Viva voce / interview. This tests depth — your degree subject, your district, your optional subjects and current affairs — not general trivia.

The interview and final merit

For general posts, the interview is the second and final stage. Under the Commission’s Recruitment Management Regulations the interview carries up to 100 marks with a 33% pass mark; the Commission adds written and interview marks and ranks candidates by merit, quota-wise, publishing results on its website. (Interview weightage can differ for special examinations — your call letter is the authority.)

Practical point from recent results: qualified candidates are asked to submit attested copies of documents within days of the result (seven days in the August 2026 Psychiatrist result) and to bring originals to the interview. Keep your file ready now — a document you can produce this week beats a promise to bring it later.

SPSC vs PPSC vs FPSC vs OTS: the numbers that change your strategy

SPSC (general)PPSCFPSC (GR screening)OTS

Negative marking-0.5 (on recent papers)-0.25-0.25typically none

The comparison that matters: SPSC’s -0.5 is the harshest penalty in Pakistani public-service testing. With 1 mark for a correct answer and -0.5 for a wrong one, a guess is worth attempting only if your chance of being right is better than one in three — in practice, attempt a question only when you can confidently rule out at least two of the four options. Blind guessing, which is free on OTS papers, actively destroys your SPSC score. Our PPSC test format page and FPSC general recruitment test format page show how the other commissions structure their papers.

Where to track your test: only spsc.gov.pk

Everything official lives on spsc.gov.pk — advertisements, written-test schedules, answer keys, past papers and results (verified live 20 October 2026). Admission slips are issued online for download, and the Commission also runs a mobile app for alerts. Check the “Written Test Schedules” and “Answer Keys” sections rather than trusting forwarded WhatsApp screenshots: dates and centres change, and the site is the only source that matters. The official CCE-2019 papers on the site are the best free look at the descriptive written format.

Your 4-week preparation plan (general track)

Week 1 — English. Grammar (tenses, voice, narration, agreement), vocabulary and one comprehension passage daily. English is the single biggest block on Assistant-type papers, and our free Jobs Test Preparation course has a timed English bank plus General Knowledge, Islamiat, Pak Studies and Current Affairs banks that mirror the general sections.

Week 2 — Pakistan Studies + Islamiat. Pure recall and the cheapest marks on the paper. Compress each topic onto one page — if it doesn’t fit, it’s not revision material yet.

Week 3 — General Knowledge, current affairs, everyday science. Cover the last 6–12 months, with extra attention to Sindh-specific developments, since SPSC papers lean provincial.

Week 4 — Full mocks under time, with -0.5 discipline. Sit two full 100-question papers in exam conditions. Practise the skip rule: if you can’t eliminate two options, leave it. A skipped question scores zero; a wrong guess scores -0.5.

An honest note on coverage: our question banks cover the English and General Knowledge portions — the quantitative and analytical sections of aptitude-style papers are not covered, so don’t treat the banks as complete preparation for those. (Our GAT General and NAT format pages show what analytical sections look like; the CSS format page is the right reference if you are on the CCE track.)

Exam-day tips

  • Read the printed instructions before question 1. SPSC prints the negative-marking rule on the paper — confirm whether your paper says -0.5 or something else, and set your attempting strategy accordingly.
  • The answer sheet is OMR-style: black or blue ballpoint only (no pencil), fill each cell fully, and avoid erasers or correcting fluid — recent papers list these as instant disqualifiers for the affected answers.
  • With roughly a minute per question, keep moving: answer the certain ones first, mark the doubtful ones, and return with the skip rule in mind.
  • Carry your printed admission slip and original CNIC, and reach the centre early.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the SPSC written test pattern?

It depends on the track. General posts: one MCQ-based pre-interview written test (typically 100 MCQs / 100 marks) followed by an interview. CCE (executive cadre): an MCQ screening test, then descriptive written papers, then a viva voce. Check your advertisement to see which track you are on.

Is there negative marking in SPSC tests?

Yes — and it is strict. Recent general pre-interview papers (Assistant BPS-16, 2020 and 2024) deduct 0.5 marks per wrong answer; the CCE screening test deducts 0.25. The exact rule is printed on your question paper, so read it before you begin.

What are the qualifying marks for SPSC tests?

For general posts the qualifying mark is set per post and announced with the advertisement or result (for example, 51.5 out of 100 for the Psychiatrist BPS-17 computer-based test in August 2026). For CCE: 50 out of 100 in the screening test, then 33% in each written paper with 50% in the aggregate, then the interview.

How is the CCE different from the general SPSC written test?

The CCE is a three-stage CSS-style examination (screening, then descriptive written papers, then viva voce) for BS-17 executive posts, while general recruitment is a single MCQ paper plus interview. They need completely different preparation — essay-writing practice for CCE, MCQ speed and accuracy for general posts.

How do I download my SPSC admission slip and check results?

Admission slips are issued online on spsc.gov.pk for download, and results, answer keys and written-test schedules are published on the same site. The Commission also offers a mobile app for alerts. Never rely on forwarded screenshots — verify dates on the official site.

Which CrackExamPrep question banks help for SPSC preparation?

Our Jobs Test Preparation course covers English, General Knowledge, Islamiat, Pak Studies and Current Affairs — the general-ability sections of SPSC papers. Note honestly: quantitative and analytical sections are not covered, so pair the banks with a dedicated aptitude resource if your paper includes them.
